Algunas de las compañías lácteas más importantes de Japón anunciaron que están listas para comenzar a hacer los exámenes de radiación de sus productos con el propósito de responder a la creciente preocupación de los consumidores con respecto a los niveles de radiactividad en los alimentos a raíz del accidente nuclear que tuvo lugar en Fukushima tras el terremoto y el tsunami de marzo de 2011.
La Japan Dairy Industry Association señaló que los exámenes de radiación empezarán a hacerse próximamente en alrededor de 180 plantas, de manera que los resultados serán publicados a finales de febrero.
Entre las compañías lácteas japonesas que someterán sus productos a examen se encuentran Meiji Co, Megmilk Snow Brand y Morinage Milk Industry Co.
La Japan Dairy Industry Association se comprometió a divulgar los niveles de cesio radiactivo que se encuentren, los nombres de las plantas donde se harán las pruebas y las fechas de fabricación de los productos.
Desde hace un tiempo se le vienen haciendo pruebas a la leche antes de que se procese en las fábricas pero son muy pocos los fabricantes que repiten el procedimiento una vez el producto ha sido procesado.
Una legislación más exigente
Una alta exposición a la radiación en el medio ambiente y en los alimentos puede dañar el ADN y causar tanto leucemia como otros cánceres.
Las autoridades sanitarias japonesas decidieron reforzar las normas de seguridad alimentaria de la leche a partir de abril debido a la creciente presión de los consumidores.
Bajo esta nueva normativa la leche sólo podrá contener 50 becquerelios por kilogramo, es decir la cuarta parte de lo permitido actualmente.
Para la Japan Dairy Industry Association es fundamental vigilar el cumplimiento de las nuevas normas para obtener la confianza de los consumidores.
Alarmas encendidas
En diciembre se encontró cesio radiactivo en la leche en polvo producida por Meiji Holdings, lo cual hizo temer que la comida para bebés hubiera sido contaminada por la radiación nuclear.
La detección de altos niveles de cesio en algunos productos lácteos enciende las alarmas.
Tras recibir la queja de un consumidor Meiji Holdings hizo las pruebas necesarias, cuyos resultados le permitieron establecer que sus latas de 850 gramos no suponen un riesgo para la salud porque sus niveles de radiación se encuentran dentro de los límites que se consideran seguros.
China también adopta medidas
En un momento en el que persisten los temores de los consumidores con respecto a la seguridad de los alimentos el ministerio de salud chino anunció que planea hacer antes de finales de 2015 una revisión de sus actuales normas alimentarias en un momento.
Recientemente un niño murió tras consumir algunos productos lácteos de Synutra International, aunque ellos aseguran que las pruebas realizadas a sus productos demuestran que éstos cumplen con todos los estándares de seguridad alimentaria.
