India es el mayor productor de leche del mundo con 140 Mt, lo que supone un 17% de la producción mundial. La producción india procede fundamentalmente de pequeñas explotaciones.
En los próximos años no solo se espera que India siga liderando la producción, sino que además, que ésta aumente. Según las estimaciones de la Universidad de Wageningen, la producción de leche en India podría llegar a ser en 2017 al doble de la registrada en 2012, alcanzando los 250.000 millones de litros.
De hecho, en los últimos 10 años, la producción láctea india no ha parado de crecer. La mayor parte de este incremento va a ser absorbido por la creciente demanda.
Actualmente, los principales problemas del sector lácteo indio es que las explotaciones están muy atomizadas y son poco eficientes. Además, hay insuficiencia de forraje y muchas vacas improductivas debido a que por motivos religiosos, éstas no pueden ser sacrificadas.
Las previsiones son mejorar la genética y la nutrición con el fin de incrementar los rendimientos. El gobierno indio ya está apoyando inversiones en las infraestructuras para mejorar las cadenas de frio y la eficiencia de las instalaciones.
