“Con 2 miligramos de nanotubos de carbono [que se utilizan como materiales absorbentes para retener contaminantes de muestras de aguas y de suelos] logramos una mejor separación de los antibióticos a analizar”, señaló a la Agencia CyTA una de las autoras del estudio, la doctora Adriana Lista, profesora de Química Analítica de la Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), en Bahía Blanca, Argentina.

Y con una ventaja adicional sustancial: “Evitamos trabajar con solventes orgánicos, que son contaminantes del medio ambiente y potencialmente riesgosos para el analista”, destacó Lista.

Las científicas examinaron dos familias de antibióticos de uso habitual en veterinaria: las fluoroquinolonas, como ciprofloxacino y enroflaxacino; y los “anfenicoles”, como cloranfenicol y florfenicol. Cuando residuos de estos fármacos están presentes en alimentos de origen animal, su ingestión puede causar reacciones alérgicas e hipersensibilidad, entre otras manifestaciones. “Por eso se debe contar con métodos analíticos que permitan determinar los niveles de estos antibióticos de forma rápida”, indicó otra coautora, la licenciada Valeria Springer, del Instituto de Química del Sur que depende de la UNS y el CONICET.

Las investigadoras usaron un equipo comercial de electroforesis, que es una técnica que sirve para separar y determinar moléculas, aplicando una diferencia de potencial para generar corriente dentro de un capilar de diámetro muy pequeño. Las especies químicas, una vez que se cargan, adquieren una cierta velocidad de migración diferencial que hace que se separen, por lo cual los analistas puedan determinarlas una a una.

“Lo novedoso de nuestro estudio fue que a la solución que fluye dentro del capilar le agregamos nanotubos de carbono para lograr una separación más eficiente”, destacó Lista, quien también es investigadora del Instituto de Química del Sur.El trabajo fue publicado en la revista especializada Electrophoresis. En los próximos años, las autoras esperan que la técnica pueda tener una aplicación masiva en los laboratorios de control de la industria láctea y los organismos regulatorios.
